What We Do: Services

Children

Building on its foundation in 1926 as the Pasadena Child Guidance Clinic, Pacific Clinics today provides a range of programs for very young, pre-teen and teen-aged schoolchildren and their families. Many from unstable or disadvantaged homes, these consumers exhibit behavioral problems often born of neglect, abuse, homelessness, abandonment and multiple placements.

Emphasizing prevention and early intervention, our children’s services staff work with parents, caregivers and other agencies to provide culturally sensitive and supportive therapeutic care. We encourage family involvement in counseling and therapy with the goal of stabilizing and preserving the family unit. These programs complement Pacific Clinics’ extensive programs in family services.

Comprehensive Assessment Program

Infants and very young children (0 to 5 years) in troubled family situations are evaluated for the emotional effects of abuse, neglect, poverty and family instability. Referred by various agencies and other Pacific Clinics programs, these high-risk children and their families are assessed for identification and early intervention and provided with parent training and support services.

Child Day Treatment

In coordination with community agencies, these programs provide a range of clinic- and school-based services to help children deal with daily challenges.

Art Therapy

Art therapy uses the creative process to resolve conflicts, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and achieve mental health awareness. An area of concentration within Pacific Clinics' MFT trainee program, our art therapists' special skills are especially effective in working with young children and others with limited verbal ability. Art therapists across our programs help young consumers from toddlers to teens to more effectively express their feelings and goals. As members of multi-disciplinary teams, these specialized clinicians work to develop treatment plans for children and youth that integrate the visual arts with other treatment methods.

Full Service Partnerships (FSP)

Our multicultural staff reaches out to ensure access to new programs funded by the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA), for un-served, underserved and inappropriately served consumers. Through outreach and engagement of children at risk of expulsion from school, out-of-home placement or parental abuse/neglect, Pacific Clinics staff provides intensive field-based services and co-occurring treatment to those in greatest need.

Children’s Intensive Community Services (CICS)

This program provides intensive short-term therapeutic and supportive services to children and adolescents, many of whom have recently been hospitalized or are at risk of repeating hospitalization. Often, these consumers are in foster care and at risk of losing their current placements. The program works with the children’s natural and foster families to help children remain in their homes and schools. A network of community resources helps the children remain stable, achieve their goals and avoid re-admission to acute levels of care.

DCFS Family Preservation Program

This comprehensive program aims to prevent child abuse, reduce the number of out-of-home placements and expedite the safe return of children to their families. Its services may include in-home counseling, parent education, anger management classes, individual/family counseling and child-focused activities.

Early Childhood Mental Health Services

In partnership with Los Angeles County’s First 5 program, Pacific Clinics assists its initiatives and program development to reflect community needs and priorities. These services specifically address children who have both substance abuse and behavioral health issues, combining therapy and support services to increase their chances of remaining at home.

Systems of Care

Coordinated between Pacific Clinics and Los Angeles County agencies, intensive care management is provided to children at-risk of placement outside their current school or living situation.

Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS)

TBS is a supplemental mental health service for SED (Severely Emotionally Disturbed) children/youth who are currently receiving other mental health services. The additional support provided through TBS helps children remain in their homes and avoid out-of-home placement or transfer to a more restrictive level of care. Intensive one-to-one behavior modification intervention is provided in the home and/or school setting.
