What We Do: Services

Substance Abuse

Co-occurring Disorders (formerly known as Dual Diagnosis) are diagnosed when a consumer meets the clinical criteria for a mental illness and substance abuse and/or dependence. In our commitment to provide effective programs, Pacific Clinics provides integrated services for persons with Co-Occurring Disorders (COD) with an emphasis on recovery and wellness.

Statistics from the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use & Health estimate that 22 million people -- 9% of the population 12 years old or older -- abuse or are dependent on drugs and/or alcohol. Of this group, only 20% have sought out substance abuse services through an outpatient mental health provider. An estimated 24 million, or 11% of the population 18 and over, have a severe mental illness. Of this group, about 27% will have a co-occurring disorder.

Served by a multidisciplinary team made up of substance abuse, mental health, and medical professionals, our consumers receive comprehensive care that emphasizes treating the individual as a whole. All team members are Pacific Clinics employees and housed in the same facility, allowing for improved communication and coordination of services.

Substance Abuse Treatment

Pacific Clinics services are available to persons of all ages who meet criteria for a substance abuse/dependence diagnosis, regardless of the presence of mental health issues. Outpatient services offer individual and group counseling and drug testing, including school-based counseling in the San Gabriel and East LA areas and programs funded by the Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Act (Schiff-Cardenas) providing drug counseling for youth on probation. Our Los Angeles County-area Dependent Youth Substance Abuse Treatment program coordinates treatment with the courts and the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).

Prevention

In addressing the causes of substance abuse, our prevention programs target at-risk youth from elementary to high school age as well as their families. By providing information and opportunities to gain leadership skills, youth are redirected towards positive and meaningful activities. Community organizing, activities and events educate the community about substance abuse, advocate for policy change and mentor youth. We provide outreach and education to youth at risk for methamphetamine use/abuse, as well as screening, referral, and parent support groups targeting substance abuse/dependence.

Staff Training

A Co-Occurring Disorders Clinical Specialist provides agency-wide training at programs and through the Pacific Clinics Training Institute on a wide range of COD topics to support best practices for integrated services.
