Clinical Supervision: Contracts, Cultural Humility and Countertransference (#3085-C)

This training is intended to help Social Workers understand and utilize clinical supervision contracts with their supervisees. Emphasis will be on using pro-active approach to building supervision alliance and anticipating problems through use of a Supervision Contract. Although this presentation will follow a lecture format, participants will be included in interactive exercises and discussion. The concept of cultural humility will be discussed and the assess-build-connect (ABC) approach in Hook et al. (2016) to helping supervisees develop cultural humility will be presented.  Pamela Hays’ (2010) ADDRESSING model will also be discussed and attendees will have opportunity to assess their status with respect to privilege and minority status.Finally, looking at how counter-transference/reactivity can both happen within the supervisory relationship. The need for elf-awareness when approaching “taboo” topics and how they often involve our reactions will also be examined. 

As a result of attending this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and implement the elements of a Supervisory Contract
  • Understand the importance of a philosophy of supervision statement and take steps to develop one 
  • Learn how to develop expectations for supervision with a supervisee 
  • Learn and develop the skills necessary to give and receive feedback in supervision
  • Participants will understand the importance of cultural humility in clinical supervision relationships and will be able to help supervisees cultivate cultural humility
  • Understand the importance and relevance of being mindful and aware that supervisors may have personal feelings/counter-transference reactions towards supervisees and what they present in supervision and be able to identify at least two examples of differences/taboo topics that could impact the supervisory relationship
